As a boy seaman aged 17 Albert fought on HMS Ajax in the Battle of the River Plate. He loaded shells in the front A gun turret. Along with HMS Achilles and HMS Exeter they defeated the German Pocket Battleship Admiral Graf Spee in the first major sea battle of the 2nd World War.
